Victoria Odeniyi and Paola Giorgis in conversation for UAL Decolonising Arts Institute.
“Cultural Identity – race and ethnicity and the ways they intersect with other identities such as language, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background, nationality and so forth”
We always think of diversity visually. We are how we look, we are how we sound, we are who we look like on paper (job interview selection through unconscious bias). Culture is more than language. Multilingual student are in advantage, but in reality because of the English dominance, there are no resources for other languages to be applied in studying. The notion of a “pure” language is a construction.
An ideal classroom – understanding who we are before understanding the other. To see diversity, not to celebrate diversity.
Conclusion: Although I was hoping to get more clear insights to draw practical conclusions, unfortunately I found the conversation a heavily academic piece with unclear statements and plenty of referencing.
